Ashley's Review

Showtime had this show on for a couple of seasons called Dead Like Me, where this girl (George) is killed in a ridiculous was and ends up being a grim reaper. The show was absolutely fantastic (although the follow-up movie was not...), so I was really excited when I read the synopsis for Dead Girl Walking and it had a similar premise! I think it's really neat when classic characters like the Grim Reaper are given a new and different spin.

At first, I thought Dead Girl Walking was just going to be Dead Like Me set in a fantasy world. But then once I got about a quarter of the way in, I realized that this book is very much its own unique take on the undead. Ophelia is alive for like... one chapter... so the majority of this book is spent following her new life as a grim reaper. It's really interesting to see how death changes Ophelia, and I enjoyed watching her become a new - and better - version of herself. Once she's brutally murdered, she learns so much about people and death and what her new role is and she matures so much more quickly now that she's a reaper.

This book moves along pretty slowly sometimes, and I did feel myself skimming through some parts just to get to a more exciting part. There's not a whole lot of action or anything most of the time, although there is a lot of character introduction and development. We meet more reapers, dark angels, royals, and all kinds of other people. It's a little overwhelming trying to keep track of some of the people, but eventually it gets better. There's also a pretty decent amount of world-building, and I enjoyed the mythology and magic surrounding Ophelia's world.

When all is said and done, I really enjoyed this book. It's a shorter read and was fairly quick and easy to get through. I think fans of Dead Like Me would really enjoy it, as well as fans of YA Paranormal reads. This book is even safe for the younger YA crowd; it's pretty clean and even though it deals with death, there's not much blood and gore and all of that. I'm excited to read the next book in this series, and would give this one a 4/5!
